Volkswagen . How to Recharge 1999 Chevy Malibu Air ConditioningRecharging the air conditioning system in your 1999 Chevy Malibu after making repairs to the system is a two-part process. Since the system has been opened, moisture and air that has been introduced to the system must be removed. After you have removed the air and moisture, new refrigerant (the Malibu uses R-134A refrigerant) can be added to restore the system to factory performance. Some special tools and equipment are required for this service; you can purchase or rent them from your favorite auto parts store. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need A/C gauge set Vacuum pump Can tap Refrigerant Step by Step : 1 Separate the lower air filter housing from the upper housing by using a screwdriver to remove the screws that attach the upper housing to the lower housing. Remove the 10mm bolts that attach the lower housing to the driver-side inner fender well in the engine compartment. Lay the lower housing aside. 2 Locate the service ports on the air conditioning lines located under the air filter housing. Attach the valve on the end of the blue hose of the gauge set to the low-side fitting found on the large-diameter air conditioning line. Attach the red high-side valve on the end of the red hose on the gauge set to the high-side fitting on the small-diameter air conditioning line. Close the service valves on the gauge assembly and open the valves on the ends of the hoses by turning their knobs all the way in until they stop. 3 Screw the valve on the end of the yellow service hose on the gauge set to the inlet of the vacuum pump. Turn the vacuum pump on and open the service valves on the gauge assembly. Allow the vacuum pump to run for one hour to pull all of the moisture and air from the system. 4 Turn the vacuum pump off. Close the service valves and remove the vacuum pump from the yellow hose. Attache a can tap to the yellow hose and screw a can of refrigerant into the tap. Turn the thumbscrew on the tap in until it stops. Unscrew the thumbscrew to fully open the can of refrigerant. Open the blue service valve on the gauge assembly and start the engine. Turn the air conditioner on and set it for max air conditioning. 5 Allow the refrigerant in the can to empty into the system, then close the service valve. Remove the empty can from the tap and install another can. Open the can using the thumbscrew and open the service valve. Allow the second can to empty into the system. You will not use all of your third and final can of refrigerant. The Malibu air-conditioning system holds 28 ounces of refrigerant. Each can is 12 ounces. Add 1/4 of the third can, therefore; then close the service valve. The system is now full. Check for leaks and test drive the Malibu to verify the system functions correctly. Tips & Warnings Wear safety glasses and work gloves when working around a running engine to prevent serious injuries.
Volkswagen . How Do I Recharge the Air Conditioning on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier? The air conditioning system on a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier is user-serviceable and requires R-134a refrigerant. This type of refrigerant is available at most auto parts stores without the need for a special order. The proper operating pressure for this air conditioning system is between 25 and 45 pounds per square inch, or psi. When the system pressure falls below 25 psi it cannot produce an adequate amount of cool air. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need In-line refrigerant pressure gauge R-134a refrigerant canister Step by Step : 1 Start the car and allow the engine to reach operating temperature. 2 Set the air conditioning to "Max A/C" and place the blower fan speed control on its fastest setting. 3 Unscrew the blue low-pressure port cap. It is located to the left of the A/C compressor, on top of the large diameter aluminum refrigerant line. 4 Attach the in-line pressure gauge to the refrigerant canister. Connect the other end of the pressure gauge hose to the low-pressure port. 5 Note the pressure reading on the gauge. 6 Turn the refrigerant canister upside-down. Slowly rotate the refrigerant release valve on the in-line pressure gauge until it pierces the seal on the canister. Watch the pressure gauge for increasing pressure in the system. Rotate the release valve in the opposite direction to stop the flow of refrigerant when the pressure gauge reads 45 psi. 7 Disconnect the in-line pressure gauge from the low-pressure port. Replace the port cap. Verify that the system is producing cool air. *If you're really feeling good about the oil change and you've got the car jacked up anyway, you may want to consider doing a lube job now. See Chapter 16 for details. Recycle your old oil Never dump oil onto the ground, throw it out with your regular garbage, or flush it down a drain. It's a major toxic pollutant that needs to be treated accordingly. So what do you do with your old oil? Use the funnel to pour it into one or more clean disposable containers with tight-fitting (preferably screw-on) lids — the bottles the new oil came in or old, washed soda bottles work well. 761

If you don't have one close by, look in your phone book for the nearest oil recycling center or toxic waste disposal center. You can also bring the old oil filter along. Be sure not to contaminate the oil by mixing it with another substance or putting it into a dirty container, or recycling centers may not accept it. Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab. * #ust as the inside of your engine needs lubrication (via oil, as explained in J Chapter 15), other parts of your vehicle need lubrication as well. A lube ^jo b involves applying lubricants (various kinds of grease and oil) to some of the moving parts under your vehicle and to some of the rubber parts to keep them supple. Your transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid are lubricants, too. (See the monthly under-the-hood check in Chapter 3 about checking these fluids if you haven't already done so.) The parts of your vehicle that need periodic lubrication can include the steering linkage, transmission shift linkage, clutch linkage, parking brake cables, differential, and driveshaft universal joint fittings. Because some of these are hard to find and hard to reach, most require a special kind of lubricant. Because you can get into trouble if you don't deal with them properly, I suggest that, once or twice a year, you take your vehicle to the dealership or to a good independent repair facility. Have them lubricate everything that needs it — including the distributor, if your vehicle has one. The rest of the time, just lubricate the things that I point out in this chapter, and you'll be way ahead of the game. What do you lubricate when you do a lube job? What tools do you need? And how to you do it? This chapter answers all these questions. !? A ft Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System Volkswagen . They must be kept packed with grease to keep the components they protect moving freely without friction. Naturally, these are usually the parts that move the most, except for those inside your engine (which are lubricated with oil). Think about your vehicle and take a look at Figure 16-1. Where does most of the movement take place when you drive (not counting any kids in the backseat)? Well, the front wheels turn on wheel bearings, and they can change direction when you steer because of the steering linkage between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Your vehicle moves up and down on its suspension system and shock absorbers, which keep it level, even when the wheels are bobbing up and down on rough stretches of road.
